(Princeton Review) Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Students, not teachers or administrators, should be in control of their own education.
Start: 18:30
End: 19:00
I agree with the statement that students should be the ones to determine their own education, instead of their teachers or administrators. Despite their young age and lack of real-life experience, students still have the right to exercise their self-autonomy, especially with regards to the structure of their education. Teachers should aim not to dictate the path that their students should take, and instead they should guide their students in making the appropriate decisions for their academic pursuits. School administrators, on the other hand, are tasked with the crucial obligation to empower their students in their endeavors.
Every child has the inalienable right to an access to education, as mandated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It only follows that students should then also be given the right to choose what they would like to learn in their classrooms. In the past few decades, it has been the norm in most national curricula worldwide that students in a given cohort should all follow the same uniform standard syllabus. However, the concept of individualized education has emerged in the recent decade, which allows the syllabus to be adapted according to the individual student’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as his or her interests. In such a system, the student has the freedom to choose whichever subject combination he or she wishes to study in school. It is no wonder that students who actively pursue their interests and strengths in certain subjects often do well in these fields as well. For this reason, I believe it would be more beneficial for students to be able to control their own education.
That is not to say that we should do away with standard curricula altogether. The idea is that the standard curriculum is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and instead should be adjusted to best suit the needs and interests of each student. For this, teachers play a crucial part in advising their students in how to modify the curriculum to cater to their individual situations. As the main educators, the structuring of students’ paths in education would be incomplete without their teachers. Nevertheless, the role of teachers should be restricted to that of an advisor, being the best objective judges of their students’ capabilities. At the end of the day, self-determination should remain in the hands of the students when it comes to their own education, not in that of their teachers.
The same would apply to the school administrators. It is undeniable that the school management plays an indispensable role in the education of their students. They are in charge of attracting the best teachers to their resident staff, making the necessary networks with universities, as well as ensuring that their students receive an education that meets global standards. In the case of universities, it is the administrators who foster partnerships with other universities as well as with industry leaders, in order to best prepare and equip their college students with the crucial skills for the working world. Thus, the school management is important in empowering their students in their path to education, be it through providing funding for their academic or extracurricular pursuits, or through paving the way for their students to achieve their goals and aspirations. However, it is still the students who must choose the direction their education should take; the students must be the ones to set their own goals and aspirations for themselves.
In conclusion, students must be allowed their right to self-autonomy when it comes to their own education, for it is their own future that is at stake. Teachers and administrators should be relegated to the necessary support systems to enable their students in their educational pursuits.
