I was feeling depressed and morbid, so what better way to escape than into a depressing and morbid indie flick.

old folks

Was people-watching as usual, when there was this old man complete with the hunched back and walking rollator and all, moving at literally snail pace, while the rest of the morning rush crowd zoomed past him in the opposite direction. It looked like a scene from one of those pretentious meaningless indie films. Then I thought, how many mileage must those legs have traveled for those muscles, once sinewy and robust, to degenerate into the saggy folds of skin on bones they are right now? How many sights and exotic places and sunlight and darkness have those eyes seen before glaucoma blinded them completely? How many live concerts, how many great eclectic music, how many conversations heard for those ears to finally fail? They say "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" -- how many thoughts, ideas, fantasies, idiocy must have gone through the head till the neurons lose their malleability completely? What sort of gastronomical delights has that body experienced before Jack's colon gave him cancer and killed him? How many beers were chugged down to get that perfectly round paunch, how many kids were suckled in order for that breast to finally succumb to gravity? They move so slowly, like a snail, because on their backs, in their pores, lungs, spotty skins and shortened telomeres they carry their whole history. That frail disintegrating body is so full of everything that you start to feel the emptiness and fill it with your ammo of youth instead.

Of course like Jane Eyre said, "I don't think, sir, that you have a right to command me, merely because you are older than I, or because you have seen more of the world than I have; your claim to superiority depends on the use you have made of your time and experience." Seniority is a claim to superiority too, abused most of the time. But in general, old people are awesome.

Exam tomorrow, month-long attachment next week. I just hope that even amidst the terror nurses, excruciating embarrassment(s) etc., I won't forget the basics.
