Nowadays, food has become easier to prepare. Has this change improved the way people live? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

With increasing industrialization in many countries worldwide over the past century alone, there has never been a time in history when it had been easier to prepare the food on our table, than it is today. Thanks to the rise of industrial economies and its complex efficient food delivery systems, it is no longer necessary for the majority of us in the world to till the earth for produce, or to rear livestock in our own backyards so that we might have food to eat. The next meal is just a few blocks down the road, waiting for purchase at the nearest supermarket or restaurant. We do not need to dictate our consumption according to seasonal harvest, restrain our picks to indigenous local produce, or sometimes, we could buy our way out of putting any effort at all into preparing our meals, such as in a restaurant or with any ready-to-eat meal. And yet, the convenient access to food nowadays does not appear to have truly improved the quality of life in many people.

The availability of all kinds of food at any given location or time has made it easier for people to make wrong choices about their diet. It is exactly the types of food that aren’t good for our health, like sweets, salted chips and soda, that are displayed most prominently in groceries and supermarkets. The prevalence of 24-hour convenient stores has encouraged many late-night binge eating, and disrupted the healthy rhythm of mealtimes in the cities. Being constantly inundated with a million choices of food to pick from, this freedom has lulled many people into failing to think through their food choices wisely. The ease of food preparation and availability contribute to the obesity epidemic in developed countries, and the fast-industrializing developing nations are quickly catching up to this deadly trend. It has not improved the health of people in modern societies, and thus has not led to an improvement in people’s lifestyles.

Exacerbating this problem is the laziness induced in people due to the widespread convenience of getting food to eat. Nowadays, in a fast-paced stressful society, workers delay or totally forego their meals in an attempt to get more work done. By prioritizing productivity over sustenance, this encourages people to make unwise decisions about their food choices, and finish their meals as quickly as possibly without enjoying the food. This, in fact, diminishes productivity in the long run, due to improper nutrition and its detrimental effects on the body. Moreover, this similar lifestyle also places less importance on regular exercise, thus compounding the problem of obesity. People are less likely to cook healthier foods, when there are readily available albeit unhealthier alternatives around the corner. Cooking together, an activity which promotes relationships among people, seems less attractive in a society where food is reduced to a mere necessity rather than something to enjoy with others. Hence, the convenience of preparing food that the modern lifestyle affords, has not contributed much to an improvement in the quality of people’s lives.
